Our neighborhoods are the historical fabric of our city. Museum of Denver friend Steven Chester, an urban planner and designer behind Narrative Designs, created the Flags of Denver project to celebrate each neighborhood’s unique identity and history through distinctive and meaningful flag designs.
The Museum of Denver is pleased to share the Flags of Denver.
Belcaro, named after the grand mansion of Lawrence C. Phipps, a United States Senator from 1919 to 1931, draws its flag’s inspiration from the mansion’s architectural features. The distinctive window pattern and the rich red brick facade of the Belcaro mansion serve as the foundation for this design, paying homage to the historical and aesthetic legacy of this prestigious estate. Beyond his political career, Phipps was known for his philanthropy, contributing to the growth of Denver’s cultural and educational institutions, including the Denver Art Museum, the University of Denver, and the Denver Country Club. This legacy of civic-minded generosity is woven into the fabric of Belcaro, adding depth to the neighborhood’s storied past.
