Vice President Schuyler Colfax championed Colorado statehood and was rewarded with his name given to Denver’s first major east-west avenue. Once a prestigious residential district, it declined as a street of ill repute. Some say this decay reflected Colfax’s own decline as he was removed from office for accepting bribes to support construction of the Union Pacific Railroad.
