The University of Denver (DU) opened in 1864 (only six years after the founding of Denver City) as the Colorado Seminary. DU has since become the state’s largest full-blown private university. Old Main still anchors the DU campus in southeast Denver. DU was a “pioneer” in a lot of ways: Early graduates included women and African Americans and Martin Luthern King visited the campus in the 1960’s. DU established one of the first business schools in the country and the first school of social work between the Mississippi and West Coast. And, do you know that the first football game between the NFL and the AFL was played at DU?
