Honoring Wellshire’s 100 years, the Wellshire Golf Course has been listed on the National Register of Historic Place by the U.S. Department of the Interior. In 1926, Denver businessmen George Olinger and L.C. Fulenwider opened the Wellshire Country Club. The Club didn’t survive the Depression and was sold to the City of Denver in 1936 when it opened to the public.
Wellshire was designed by famed Scottish golf course architect, Donald Ross. The course hosted multiple USGA tournaments and Hall of Fame players such as Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and Bill Wright who crossed the color line as the first Black man to win a major title. From the gallery, General Dwight D. Eisenhower witnessed Ben Hogan win the 1948 Denver Open, Hogan’s 6th consecutive win, a streak not matched until 2000 when Tiger Woods accomplished the feat.
